Corsock's Mercy Home, Kodaikanal
Mercy Home is a charitable residential facility for the destitute elderly. It provides basic food and board to up to 20 residents at a time many of whom have either been rejected by their families or have no relatives willing to care for them in their old age. The home runs on a shoestring budget and is always in need of help to provide food, clothing and health care to the residents.
Dr. Mathew has been involved with Mercy Home since 1986, both individually and as the Social Experience Coordinator at Kodaikanal International School between 2008 and 2010. The Kodai Music Festival organized under his watch in 2009 raised funds for the 500 litre solar water heater system that provides hot water for the residents [ a necessity in the cold mountain weather] as well as for mattresses, duvets and pillows. He also provides health care when ever possible including medicines and medical advice. He also supervises maintenance of the kitchen garden which provides some of their daily needs. Future plans include student clinics in manual therapy and massage to be conducted at the Home for the residents.
